JOHN'S La Marmotte Challenge Posted Tuesday, April 15, 2008 by Tony Another commercial supporter, "Bike Eye" have donated me two cycling mirrors, one for my training bike and one for my racing bike. I will be fitting one this afternoon and giving it a try. Thank you Tony from Bike-Eye.
Thursday night and I went to coaching session at the Hayes Circuit. We soon settled into a compact and efficient group of 6 and maintained a good average speed throughout, in fact we were not caught by either the two "faster" groups, a good achievement by all concerned. By the time I had completed a warm up and a warm down 30 miles had been clocked up. My legs ache a bit now, the inner thigh muscles for some reason.
A very windy Friday morning at the circuit. We went around in the opposite direction to get some respite from the wind but it was still a struggle. 45 miles today. I fitted my Bike Eye mirror this morning and it is very effective and a much safer way of viewing the traffic behind you.
MY CHALLENGE It's every cyclists dream to ride up the passes in the French Alps made so famous by the Tour de France cyclists over the past 100 years. I have that dream and on July 5th 2008 I hope to fulfill it by completing the La Marmotte cycling challenge. The event starts in Bourg D'Oisans at the foot of Alpe d'Huez and proceeds in a clockwise direction, first a 25 km climb to the peak of the Col du Clandon 1,924m (6,312 ft) high, a long descent back into the valley before the 12 km ascent of the Col du Telegraph 1,570m (5,150 ft ). Just a 4 km descent before the ascent of the Col du Galibier, a 17 km climb to a height of 2,642m (8,668 ft). Next a 47km ride, mostly downhill to return to Bourg D'Oisans, but the ride does not finish here. After 160 kms on the road (100 miles) a right turn and we take on the 13 km ascent of Alpe d'Huez, undoubtedly the most famous climb in the Tour de France, tackling 21 hairpin bends to finish at the ski station at an elevation of 1,880m (6,168 ft).

Phil and his wife have the Bike-Eye rear view mirror fitted on their bike's. PHIL says about BIKE-EYE: "I don't think I would leave home without it now I can keep an eye on my wife Pat when she is behind me, but I found the only draw back is she can see me when I am chasing her. I am sure Bike-Eye will be a great success and very worthwhile in modern-day cycling." Phil
